Chapter 17

My sleep was restless after that, with echoes of the words “order and disorder” loud in the back of my mind. I couldn’t help but think it was a clue to the next trial, like “shape and form” had been before the last one.

When I gave up on sleep and dragged myself outside, everyone caught my shitty mood and gave me a wide berth. With a dull resignation, I first destroyed the corpses of the two humans Cade had fed on sometime in the last twelve hours. Then I showered, ate, and sorted out all the necessities to keep my body in good order.

Or almost all of them. I could use a good fuck, but between the lack of privacy, the deadline, and our overall tiredness, Troy and I settled for my perching on his lap at the fire kettle, much to the consternation and confusion of everyone except him. Yeah, it was highly inappropriate, completely unprofessional, and was probably undermining my own authority, but the effects of my trip to Asheville lingered for both of us. I needed the closeness, doubly so with my inner agitation.

Troy was delighted at the clear mark of my favor, probably especially with all the people who’d received my blood recently. He lounged in the chair with a king’s satisfied arrogance, even as he played furniture, one hand loose on my hip, the other swiping out a text message to Allegra as I nibbled on a toaster waffle and stared out over the lake, considering the small box in my other hand.

Both our hearing was good enough to catch the sounds of Cade vigorously fucking Lya in their tent a few yards away, even if they were trying to be quiet about it, but I wouldn’t begrudge them the moment.

Troy finished his message and shifted us to shove his phone in his pocket. “We need to figure out next steps.”

“Mmm.” I took another bite of my waffle. The blueberry in it tasted fake, which was kind of grossing me out after getting used to Troy’s homemade food, but it would give me a little carb boost. One I badly needed, given I was running on fumes. “The first trial was Fire. The second was Water. I think the third will be Earth.”

“And the fourth Air?”

“No. They won’t give me Air. That would be too much of an advantage on my part. Chaos, maybe.”

“I’m coming with you this time.”

My heart squeezed as the mental image of him bleeding out on firelit sand intruded. “No. I need you to anchor me here.”

“If the trial is to do with Earth—”

“I know. You carried me out of the lich’s lair. That’s why I need you here.” I leaned to kiss him, hoping to take the sting out of my order and the tight tone I delivered it in. “I keep thinking about the last trial. The water crashing down. Troy, I think I only woke up because I was trying to get back to you.”

He cupped my cheek and pulled me forward, resting his forehead against mine.
